Understanding the basics of cosmetic dentistry

From the subtlest of changes to major repairs, your cosmetic dentist can perform a handful of different procedures which are designed to improve your smile. A cosmetic dentist can improve chipped teeth, discolored teeth, or missing teeth. They can also reshape your teeth, change the length of your teeth, and close any spaces that exist in between your teeth. The most common procedures include veneers, contouring, bonding, bleaching, and crowns.

Some of these improvements are not just for cosmetic purposes. In most cases, these treatments can also improve things like your bite and otherwise improve your overall oral health. Let’s take a look at each:

Bleaching

Bleaching is a chemical process that a Cosmetic Dentist will use to whiten your teeth. Some people just want their teeth to be a whiter Shade. Other people want to make things disappear. Cigarette use, genetics, coffee consumption, and medication can all lead to discoloration of your enamel. Bleaching treatments can whiten your teeth quickly, and the bleaching outcome will last for 1 to 2 years.

Bonding

If you have a gap in between your teeth or you need to change the color of your teeth, bonding can be used. Bonding is a tooth-colored material that your cosmetic dentist can put in between your teeth. All it takes is one visit, and the bonding will last several years. The composite resin used during bonding is great for teeth that are chipped or slightly decayed. It can also be used to fill in small cavities. If you want to change the shape or color of the outside part of your tooth, you can use bonding to do that. If you want to fill in the spaces between your teeth, you can use bonding.

Crowns

Crowns commonly referred to as caps, and are designed to cover your tooth so that it looks normal in shape and color. Crowns will last the longest out of all cosmetic treatments, but they are very time-consuming to have completed and quite costly.

Veneers

Veneers are thin plates or covers that are made of plastic or porcelain and put over the front of your tooth to change the shape and color. Crowns cover your entire tooth, but veneers are more aesthetic in nature. They can be used to treat similar problems as bonding. If you have spaces or gaps that you want to cover, veneers can do that. If you have an uneven surface on your tooth, one tooth that is oddly shaped, a chipped tooth, or a crooked tooth, a veneer can give you the appearance of a better smile. Many people prefer veneers to crowns because they are less expensive and it doesn’t take as long. When you get a veneer, your dentist just takes an impression of your tooth, has a custom-made veneer cemented onto your tooth, and then lightly buffs the tooth so that the veneer sort of slides into place and blends in perfectly with your existing teeth. A cement compound is used to adhere the veneer to your tooth, and a laser is used to harden the cement almost immediately. The process is very fast.

Contouring and reshaping

If you have a crooked tooth, overlapping teeth, or chipped teeth, reshaping and contouring can be used to alter the position, shape, or length of your teeth. If you have small problems with your bite, you can use this process to fix them.
